Henry Mendonca, native of Pernal in Udupi district, writes in the pen name H M Pernal. Presently he lives in Mangaluru.
He has been writing in Konkai since 1984. He has Six published titles to his credit. ‘Chalyank Chatrai’ (1999) ‘Koydhyacho Kavitaa’ (2004) and ‘Bhamunachem Chedu’ (2006) are collection of poetry. ‘Devak Sodullo Pado’ (2002) and ‘Beeg Ani Beegath’(2016) are collection of short stories. ‘Konknni Kavyem : Rupam ani Rupakam’(2021) is a collection of critical essays on Konkani poetry.
Among these, Beeg Ani Beegath’ – collection of short stories won prestigious Vishwa Konkani Vimala V Pai Book Award and ‘Konknni Kavyem : Rupam ani Rupakam’ won Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy best book award.
Apart from these two book awards he is honored with Kavita Trust’s Mathaias Family Award for his contribution to poetry and Lifetime achievement award from Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy. He is honored with Karnataka Rajyotsava Awad for Konkani Literature and Journalism in the year 2023 from Dakshina Kannada District.
H M Pernal is the publisher and editor of Konkani literary website www.kittall.com and publisher of ‘Arso’ magazine both published from Mangaluru since 2011. His works are regularly published on print and e media. Through Kittall Publications so far he has published more than 15 books.
He was referee and jury for Sahitya Akademi and Karnataka State Konkani Sahitya Academy. Presently he is the Advisory Board Member of Konkani at Sahitya Akademi New Delhi and He was the working president 25 th All India Konkani Sahitya Sammelan held at Mangaluru.
