The ceremony of Roce is not only restricted to Mangalorean christian culture. This is there in Hindu religion also. But the difference is they use Turmeric powder solution. If we go to christian marriages in the Karwar ,Belgaum diocese we see christian community using turmeric in the occasion of roce. How many of us know that in the above diocese and districts people plant a tree in front of the house two- three days prior to the Roce ceremony indicating that a marriage function will be held in the family.The plant/tree will be removed two days after the marriage ceremony. The use of turmeric is to purify and may be to give a glow to the bride and bridegroom.But apart from this it is a culture. There are no priest, gurkars or anybody in this event. All the senior members of the family come together and conduct the roce.
But in Mangalorean community there was a tradition that after Roce the bride or bridegroom should not go out of house till the wedding ceremony is held at the church. Usually the roce was held one day prior to the wedding. This was symbolic to maintain the purity of the person after roce. But now a days roce is held 3-4 days prior to wedding and the bride/bridegroom start partying for the next few days before the wedding.
The availability, booking and dates of halls for the Roce and Wedding ceremony has become more important than the actual wedding. The wedding dates are decided based on the availability of halls. The church where the wedding is held and the priest is never relevant, People are happy to travel 10 -15 kms from the church after the wedding to a hall to enjoy the celebration. So the celebration has become more prominent than the wedding ceremony or tradition.

Because neither the bride nor the groom know what roce means.
You cannot impose a culture on those who have no exposure.
Did Chicago succeed in teaching Konkany to their own kids who know that cashew nuts and coconuts grow in supermarkets.
I have no respect for any such culture that divides people and families.
Thanks folks. Discuss things that put food on the table and alms in the basket. Not crabs.

Roce was always cultural and not religious. It is evolution of thousands of years and is the assimilation of nature and cultural practices. Of late it is turned into a religious event so much so that at times I feel it will be made into a sacrament. It was a simple function for people gathering supported by the cultural values of the community. Religion has no place there. Even the prayers should be of reasonable limit not to take away the essence of culture. Nowadays everything everywhere is overplayed. culture should be left to culture.

Beautiful writing eye opening one Kishoo. I don’t know when this custom of roce become religious ceremony. Is this ceremony followed in Rome and other christian countries?? Don’t understand whether to laugh or cry on priests new command and the followers are too great.
